Since getting over the dry spell, I have found myself drawn more and more to Landscape style photography. Working on composition, technique, focusing on my minds eye, to learn new processing techniques. However, I found myself longing to dive into Long exposure photography. Yes it is overdone to death but the images are beautiful.
Therefore, I finally took the plunge and picked myself up a Nisi ND1000 10 Stop Nano Coated filter (and the other associated bits and pieces)
Then the adventures began. Since picking up this filter in early September I have been out 10 times practising with this thing. I have been able to borrow some ND Graduated filters from a work colleague to experiment with those, subsequently I now want those as well…thank you for that (you know who you are)
This kind of photography though…in some ways, Its actually a hell of a lot harder than I thought it would be. There are so many things to consider with your shot. Metering the light to correctly expose, composition (where the slightest adjustment can make or break an image) timing the shot with the moving water. Checking other factors such as sunrise & sunset times coupled with the tide times to ensure the scene will be how you want it.
What is also a shocking contrast is the amount of photos I would take. Typically on a wedding it could be where from 1800 to 3000 photos in a day. Or when travelling just happily snapping away, hundreds and hundred. Now when I head down to the coast, I don’t think I have taken more than 10 shots in one go!
Where do we go from here? Well, I am picking up my next filter tomorrow which is specifically tailored toward Sunset & Sunrise long exposures. I will be experimenting and working with this more to continue to improve wherever I can. Also not to mention exploring different locations!
What else outside of photography?
Aside from the photography. I have been preparing a blog post on Vietnam which will be coming soon as the next part in the travel series. I am also looking to make the following improvements to the website;
- Implementing HTTPS for secure browsing
- Adding a dedicated gallery for our best work to showcase
- Adding ecommerce to the website to purchase prints
