Brisbane Gold Coast & Moreton Island,
When we initially begun to plan our trip to Australia the only reason we were going to visit Brisbane was to see a friend of Ana’s. It turned out to be our favourite place so far! The city has this amazing vibe to it. Walking around at night you could feel this incredible energy around you. Feeling perfectly safe at all times (not that we had ever felt unsafe anywhere else). The city has a great balance of work/enterprise and night life/relaxation. Everyone is happy!
Oh, did we also mention it has a beach…right in the middle of the city?!
Whilst we were here we did a lot of exploring on foot as usual, took a ride on the ‘CityCat’ which is a public transport catamaran service that runs along the main river through Brisbane. Not your most typical commuting option but a brilliant idea!
There is also the ‘Cityhopper’ which is a completely free boat service along the river and a great way to see lots of the city in a short amount of time.
We visited Mount Coot-tha and that gave an amazing view of the whole of Brisbane and its suburbs, and one evening went out along South Bank to the Plough Inn.
Over the next few days we visited Bribie Island and spent the day on the beach; we took a drive to the Gold Coast which was stunning and drove right down to the boarder between Queensland and New South Wales.
Brisbane city itself has a lot to offer. There are several museums which were not only fantastic, but free to go in and visit. The “Museum of Brisbane” is based inside City Hall, and has a clock tower where regular tours run to go up the tower which gives a different view of the town. There were also art galleries, A LOT of restaurants…which is always the priority.
So far in the trip, for accommodation we had been using a combination of hotels, motels, hostels and AirBNB. When in Adelaide we found out about an app called ‘couchsurfing’ – we had never heard of this before. We took a look, and the idea/concept behind it is amazing. It is an enormous community of people (usually who have travelled a lot) who want to offer their spare beds/couch for other travellers to stay on. In Brisbane we stayed with 2 different hosts and had a great experience with both. In the future we will be surfing wherever possible…which will give us the opportunity to save money, and more importantly meet new people.
We took a day trip to Moreton Island, lots of people had recommended it to us, it looked like a good place to relax and it was somewhere new to see. It was an early start but it was worth it. The island was stunning, and it was so peaceful and quiet. The ocean is fantastically calm and warm, a definite one to do if you’re ever close by!
Our time here was short, and we really enjoyed Brisbane Gold Coast & Moreton Island in just a week…we know its somewhere we will want to come back to in the future…our next stop is Cairns
Until next time,
Jake & Ana
